MAUP #17 - Ukulele: A Life-changing Adventure in Zambia

MAUP #17 - Ukulele: A Life-changing Adventure in Zambia

Feb. 2021

17 program cover

For the past two years, MAUP has visited the Cottle elementary school's diversity club for interactive presentations with the young students at this time of year. However, with in-person meetings with a large group proven to be difficult due to the ongoing pandemic, MAUP decided to create a video instead. The first half focuses on Cara's experiences with traveling to and teaching ukulele in Zambia in the summer of 2019, in an interview-format with Yuri. Then, it shifts into a ukulele concert with a solo performance from Cara, Sam and Yuri, wrapped up with Yuri's arrangement of How Far I'll Go performed by all three players.

The video will be shared with the 3rd graders as their feature country during the spring months, and with the 5th graders who learn ukulele at the W.E. Cottle school. MAUP hopes that the young students can take something away from the presentation. Special thanks to diversity club director Mrs. Ferguson and music teacher Mrs. Kim!

Music binds the community together, despite the social distancing and quarantining guidelines.
